Best places to visit in 2023

Naoshima, Japan

Yayoi Kusema is the world’s best-selling female artist. She is known for her giant pumpkin sculptures with polka dots. One of them was reinstalled in 2022 at Naoshima’s pier after it had been swept away by the sea the previous year.

Naoshima offers so much more to visitors than the famous yellow gourds or Kusama’s works.

Five small “art islands” are located in the Seto Inland Sea in southeast Japan, between Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Naoshima has the most attractions, including the only hotel. The five artists are united in their support of modern and contemporary art with a focus on Japanese artists.

Do not expect to see calligraphy or other classic forms. You’ll be amazed by Tadao ando’s stone monoliths. There is also a small gallery in which you can only hear the sounds of peoples hearts. A makeshift storm has been created inside a wooden home. LM
